The Process of Learning SALSA

two people learning to dance salsaIf you've never been to a salsa class before it can be a little bit daunting because you don't know what to expect. You'll have lots of questions such as; what are classes like, who actually goes to a class, is it an easy dance to learn? Plus lots more questions.. We'll try to answer some of those here.

Salsa is a FUN partner dance that originated in Cuba. It is quite easy to learn though the salsa beat initially takes a bit to master. You will begin with the basic steps, initially without a partner, to get the feel of the rhythm. After a few minutes, if you feel ready, you'll take your first steps with a partner. We'll show you how to move, how to hold and explain the theory of leading and following. Slowly you will build confidence and before you know it you will have learned your first 'moves'. As your confidence grows you'll learn more and more patterns and skills.

The people who learn salsa come in all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds. Generally though the age group is 40 plus. A mix of singles and couples from all walks of life. If you feel you'd like to have private classes at first that is totally fine but we recommend that you also attend Sweet Salsa group classes too on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Salsa is a very social dance and everyone is encouraged to dance with everyone else. You will find that the atmosphere in the group is very inclusive and kind and other sudents are more than happy to help in the learning process.

learning to dance salsa in a groupIt's not all about learning though. At the weekends there are gatherings that we call Salsa Parties - Sweet Salsa have these on the first Saturday of each month - where salsa dancers in the wider area meet to just dance the night away. It's a chance to put into practice what you have learned. These are always good fun and you'll find that you will become part of a wider 'salsa family'. You will have also found yourself a whole new social life with a big new group of friends.

So, what are you waiting for - a whole new experience awaits. Take that first step
